History of the Yorkie

Yorkshire Terriers

Yorkshire Terriers were developed in England, but today’s Yorkie is much different from the original terrier bred to hunt. Today’s Yorkie is one of the most popular of all the toy breeds. He is as charming as he is intelligent. A Yorkie is full of courage, which can get him into trouble. Yorkies do not view themselves as a small dog. They are “lion hearted” and fiercely loyal. A Yorkie is full of affection for his family. Yorkies do not have an undercoat, but have silky hair, much like a human and do not shed. Yorkies are indoor dogs, but do enjoy that romp in the yard or walk around the neighborhood. Yorkies from well bred stock are generally hardy and healthy and live to be 12-16 years of age. The AKC breed standard is to 7 pounds, many people refer to those under 4 lbs as “teacup Yorkies or T-Cup Yorkshire Terriers”. This word is not recognized by AKC, but we know that you mean a smaller than average dog. Yorkies take on life with a gusto few others can match. They are almost too cute to be real.

Just a Dog

He's just my dog. He is my other eyes that can see above the clouds, My other ears that hear above the winds. He is the part of me that can reach out to sea. He has told me a thousand times over that I am his reason for being... By the way he rests against my leg; By the way he thumps his tail at my smallest smile; By the way he shows his hurt when I leave without taking him. When I am wrong, he is delighted to forgive. When I am angry, he clowns to make me smile. When I am happy, he is joy unbounded. When I am a fool, he ignores it. When I succeed, he brags. Without him, I am only another man. With him I am all-powerful. He has promised to wait for me... whenever... in case I need him. And I expect I will... as I always have. He's just my dog. Written by Gene Hill
